Punca utama penyakit kencing manis jenis 2 ( jenis yang biasa berlaku berlaku di Malaysia) ialah disebabkan kes kegagalan transporter glukosa jenis 4 (GLUT-4) dan rembesan insulin berfungsi secara normal.
Pada masa ini kesan negatif ubat-ubatan antidiabetik yang ketara keatas pesakit yang menggunakannya telah mendorong saintis melakukan penyelidikan keatas potensi ubatan nutraseutikal (herba) sebagai alternatif.
Satu pasukan saintis pengkaji seramai 8 orang daripada University of Medical Sciences, Iran di ketuai oleh Khajebishak Y telah menjalankan penyelidikan dan kajian mengenai keberkesanan suplemen minyak biji delima bagi mengatasi kegagalan transporter glukosa jenis 4 (GLUT-4) dan rembesan insulin berfungsi secara normal.
Kajian randomized clinical ini dilakukan pada tahun 2018 keatas sejumlah 52 pesakit kencing manis selama 8 minggu di Tabriz, Iran. Pesakit dibahagi kepada 2 kumpulan dimana kumpulan pertama seramai 26 pesakit diberi 3 kapsul setiap hari yang mengandungi 1gm minyak buah delima (PSO) manakala kumpulan plasebo (n = 26; jumlah yang sama paraffin).
Hasil kajian klinikal ini mendapati Ekspresi gen GLUT-4 telah meningkat dengan ketara dalam kumpulan pesakit yang mengambil minyak buah delima (PSO) dan kandungan gula darah menurun. Kesimpulan yang dihasilkan dari randomized controlled clinical trial ini telah membuktikan bahawa minyak buah delima (PSO) berjaya meningkatkan ekspresi gen GLUT-4 pada pesakit diabetes tanpa apa-apa kesan sampingan.
Sesungguhnya ubatan dari herba seperti buah delima memberi manafaat yang sangat besar dalam merawat dan mencegah penyakit kronik seperti kencing manis dan lain-lain dan daripada kepitusan pelbagai peringkat kajian mendapati buah delima tidak mendatangkan kesan sampingan.
